Accessibility Checker — ADA & WCAG Scanner
Last updated: March 2026
1. Overview
The Accessibility Checker — ADA & WCAG Scanner Chrome extension (“the Extension”) is published by PageAuditors. This privacy policy explains what data the Extension collects, how it is used, and how it is stored.
The Extension does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data with PageAuditors or any third party. All scan data is processed and stored locally on your device.
2. Data Collected
When you run an accessibility scan, the Extension processes the following data from the current page:
- Page URL and title: To identify which page was scanned.
- Accessibility violations: Issue descriptions, severity levels, affected HTML elements (first 200 characters), and CSS selectors identified by the axe-core scanning engine.
- Compliance score: A calculated accessibility score for the scanned page.
- Dark pattern indicators: Results of checks for common deceptive design patterns on the page.
- Government domain detection: Whether the page is hosted on a .gov or .mil domain (pattern matching only).
The Extension does not collect:
- Personal information (name, email, account data)
- Browsing history
- Cookies or authentication tokens
- Form data or user input on pages
- Analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking data
3. How Data Is Stored
Scan results are stored locally on your device using chrome.storage.local. The Extension retains the 10 most recent scan results for your convenience. You can clear all stored data at any time using the “Clear History” button in the Extension.
No data is stored on any external server. Uninstalling the Extension removes all stored data from your device.
4. Data Transmission
The Extension does not transmit any data to external servers. There are no analytics services, tracking pixels, or server-side API calls.
The Extension includes optional links to pageauditors.com for users who want a full multi-page accessibility report. These links are clearly labeled, only open when you click them, and include UTM parameters to indicate the click came from the Extension. No scan data is included in these links.
5. Permissions
The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:
- activeTab: Allows the Extension to access the content of the tab you are currently viewing, only when you activate the Extension. It cannot access other tabs or run in the background.
- scripting: Allows the Extension to inject the axe-core accessibility scanning engine into the current page to analyze it for WCAG violations.
- storage: Allows the Extension to save your scan history locally on your device using
chrome.storage.local.
6. Third-Party Code
The Extension uses the following open-source libraries, all of which run entirely on your device:
- axe-core: Accessibility scanning engine by Deque Systems. Runs locally; does not make network requests.
- Preact: Lightweight UI framework. Runs locally; does not make network requests.
7. Changes to This Policy
If we update this privacy policy, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
